Georgia Public Television presents the 2001 Georgia High School Association Girls State Basketball Championships.
Major funding for this broadcast is made possible in part by Georgia's natural gas IBEW Local 613 Georgia Touchstone Energy Cooperative, and by South Trust Bank.
Live from the Cineplex in Macon, it's the single-A girls basketball championship, Jefferson Lady Dragons taking on wrestling Lady Wolves.
And welcome to day two of Championship Week.
And I'm Jim Tanaka, along with my colleague Phil Hansen.
Five girls games on tap today.
The first one, Phil, involves the school that opens its doors 50 years ago and has shown a lot of patience because they're playing in their first championship game today.
Well, they're making the most out of it.
They've done a super job of changing up their offensive sets and their defensive sets and execution in the offensive sets.
Let's look at the road to the finals, the Johnson County game.
They mix it up and they went right at him off the pressure.
High key players for Jefferson.
Now Lee DeVos, you have to mention number 22 she's been a key player all year.
Well, every great team has a great score and she does a nice, nice job of getting her shot off in the offensive set and creating scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates.
Now, Lee scored 31 points in the semis, but she injured her right wrist.
We'll get a report from Jon Nelson later in the broadcast now and he goes, There is also a key player.
Well, she's been coming to this tournament for a long, long time as a little kid sitting in the stands.
But she's going to have to come up big today due to the fact that she's going to be going against Shepherd Stringer and Bernie for Wesleyan inside.
Now, we talked earlier about Jefferson opening the doors 50 years ago.
Wesleyan open their doors four years ago in year one, they lost to a school named Pi Day 96 to 12, and they only score one point.
The second half was a tackle, a free throw.
What a difference in three years.
Look at this road of the championship.
On the road to the championship against Wilcox County.
They did a nice job of running the ball.
They go north and south.
They only send three people to the glass and they release their guards and they're off to the races.
And hey, how about Nikki Luckhurst number three?
She's tremendous.
She is the spark that starts this Wesleyan machine.
Great offensive player.
Again can score and create scoring opportunities for her teammates.
Nikki has a lot of key players on the team to help her out, and especially this one down.
I love her to death.
She is the X Factor.
I believe she is the toughest matchup on the floor because she can go inside outside with with a great deal of efficiency.
You have to watch out also for girls like Jenny Hall and especially especially a Cory Paxton.
Couple of good players there.
She's the super sub.
She could start for a lot of teams in the tournament.
We've got two other games scheduled today.
As we mentioned, we have five.
The two way championship game is going to feature Union County taking on Jaycee.
That's coming up after this one.
The triple-A game, the lady Elvis of Gainesville taking on the Raider X of North east later on tonight.
It's the four eight game, the Central Black Knights taking on North Atlanta Warriors.
And the five eight game tonight is the last of the Trojans and Collins Hill Eagles.
So a big day of basketball coming your way right here on TV.
The starting line ups are going to be announced in the background as we have the public address announcer Eddie Ashley doing the honors for the starting five to go as your home team.
Both teams are perimeter based.
You have the Boz is the shooting guard we talked about.
Floyd is going to give him a little punch inside outside.
Childress is the quarterback of this team.
She is the team person on this team that won't let them lose it goes is going to have to bang inside and Bush is going to have to give him help inside also.
All right.
How about we listen to public address announcer Eddie Ashley.
Let's get a drum.
Yeah, Have your attention for the starting lineups.
First for Jefferson, head forward a five foot seven sophomore number 25, Sonny Bush at 41517.
Junior number 22, Lee DuBose at center, a five foot ten sophomore, number 45.
And he goes at a five foot seven.
Jordan number 23.
Mm.
LLOYD At five foot nine, junior number 24, Stacy Childress and Jefferson's coach, Kevin Jacobs.
And now for your west here, the Lady Wolves at 4a6 foot senior number 58 of 30 and for a five foot ten Jordan number 44 and a seven at center a six foot one.
Sophomore number 13, Kevin Stringer at guard for five junior number four, Jimmy O.
All for the freshman.
Number three in the locker, first at West 38 on the stage has been set at the single-A girls basketball championship Jefferson West.
We'll have it for you after these messages.
And a word from typically funding for broadcast at the DHS, GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championship is provided in part by the following you're watching.
Members supported TV's Your PBS station bringing you the best.
You're watching the USA Basketball Championships on TV.
And welcome back to the center plex and Macon.
The cheerleaders are ready to go for this one.
Jefferson in Wesleyan.
The big question for Jefferson, Lee DuBose.
Hey, John Nelson, this is an injured risk going to play a factor in today's game for Lee?
Well, if Lee, if it's going to play a factor for Lee, she's not going to say and she's not going to tell anybody.
Basically, it's a don't ask, don't tell policy.
Kevin Jacobs isn't going to ask about the risk.
If you look at it, it's about a knot the size of a quarter on her shooting hand, but she scored 31 in the semi.
She doesn't even want to take because she's superstitious.
Where Wesleyan is concerned, they're student body other loud, but they're on spring break.
So their support may not be what it is.
And Jenny's are had to call in some markers since she was an ad former assistant at Mount DeSales here in Macon to get people in the stands.
More on her later.
Jim, back to you.
All right, John, thanks for the update.
We're ready to go.
So I think the key is in today's game, Jefferson has to get this game going east and west.
If it's a north and south ball game, it's going to be a long day.
All right.
Off the opening tip.
And it's the lady wolves that take control and attack extremely fast.
Western does three point shot attempt off the line by Kenny Hall and here comes Jefferson.
They're going to run a lot of sets, man to man defense just underway from the center plex and making the single girls state basketball champion and they bounced out in a23 zone match.
Nice movement, nice ball movement.
And the turnaround jumper is off the mark.
He easily.
And here comes the lady Wolves on his deal.
They've got to locate Dana Birney every time down the floor she'll wear out that 15 footer we highlighted in the open Dana Burnie and she scores the first bucket of the game to nothing Wesleyan Wesley is now in a triangle to make three people playing zone to think of playing man to man trying to force the ball underneath was Stacy Childress and it goes off the Lady Wolves again.
Offensive execution in the half court.
That's going to be a key in today's ballgame because a diagonal screen here comes creation speed and there she is.
Childress Nice pass underneath and the hoop lead to Barnes She's a scorer but the whole thing is set up on the screen.
So we're tied at two the early going Jefferson in a13113 chaser zone on the baseline one guy floating through the middle girl playing him in Denver 30 from downtown and West Linn has the early five to lead.
She's tough.
She is a tough player.
Melinda Ford throws it cross-court.
There's Melissa Floyd, I should say Floyd from three point plan off the ball good rebound on the side finally the ball so it's Wesley and five and lead to post four I know coach Jacobs is happy with that that his team is getting some rebounds early data great looking behind it up to oh she is ready to go again I think she's the toughest matchup on the floor because she can go inside outside with a great deal of efficiency.
A seesaw battle in these first two and a half minutes here in making a wild pass through to find Sonny Bush underneath.
But a little hot air in the nice job.
She's mixing up her defenses here.
Now it's a box and one and a three point attempt is off the mark by Beasley.
Here's another three points and good block Who was the quarterback of this club you were talking about earlier today Key player they have luckhurst guarding DeVos man to man and everybody else is playing a back zone that's a 6050.
Great.
Please do this.
To get one shot and done.
They're going to work the ball around, run their offensive sets.
There's coach Azar.
She's got to be ecstatic with how things are turning out early.
And as we talked about in the open, what a job she's done in the last three years since opening up this program four years ago.
And it's knocked out of bounds.
And the Lady Wolves will keep the ball up.
Nikki Luckhurst to inbound and does so to Jenny Hall and a three point attempt by looking lucky Cece box and she has been falling on the floor.
What a shot by Luckhurst West Linn 13 Jefferson four in the early going It's good ball movement there by Jefferson taking the time.
Be patient.
That's going to be a tough pass to make because they're throwing it over three or four defenders.
You got to bring that ball below the foul line, extend it and then bounce, which will create a better angle to task.
Again, watch the screen for the screener wondering what a difference in the early going.
It's really paying off Wesley and Jefferson with some good ball movement.
And we have a whistle on the far side and this one's going to go against Nicki Luckhurst against that box and one Jim Cup.
Some things you may want to try.
The people who aren't being guarded, they need to set a screen for the Bose, get her off that to come around.
And so she does at the run all around, entire self out lead to Bose 31 points in the semis.
They may want to get somebody back here because Luckhurst is getting playing below the defense.
If they get a long rebound, she's going to left.
They're going to turn around.
The Bose hits one of two.
It's 13 five.
Wesley.
Here's a nice drive down the side of the lane, off the mark where you got to stop that pretty high, long scoring pass and the back shot off the mark by the bowling hustle by Sonny Bush.
And a jump on possession is coming towards Jefferson.
You got to love that.
Both these kids diving on the floor.
Three guys this high school basketball on special.
So Jefferson will inbound the ball.
Stacy Childress will do the honors.
It did a nice job of having a screen for the screener.
Going to go slightly for the rebound, don't reach down, get on the floor and get it.
If you reach down to get it this easy way to take out and get on the floor and get the ball this on the back four.
So the stepping back in there she is Childress drives the lane stuffed over here this to 330 on it Look at 30 I'm dribbling the ball and saving it there Now we have a whistle and a player is down for Jefferson.
I think they lock the legs.
Sonny Bush is the injured player.
And boy, I tell you what, it has gone silent.
It's go, well, she's all right here in the center place.
Look for them to come in with Audrey Johnson to help her in the post position.
Sonny Bush, five foot, seven inch platform for Jefferson Smith, twisted her ankle, looks like a right ankle, right knee.
The crowd gives her a big hand as she goes off the coming in with Ashley Evans.
So Evans takes Bush Bush's place on the floor.
Now there's a timeout on the floor.
There you see Kevin Jacobs.
He's done quite a job with the Dragons, a heck of a record, but this is a good time out.
Now he can talk to his troops, by the way, folks, DEADLINE for entries in the Georgia Natural Gas True Blue scholarship has been extended April 16th.
Stay tuned during the games for information on nominating a deserving male and female student athlete.
Good old folks there at Georgia national team thanks them for their support of high school sports here on TV.
Did you luckhurst to end inbound the ball for the Lady Wolves Jefferson in a23 match soon and Evans will pop up high if need be.
Paul swings it over to Luckhurst back over the hall on the left wing.
Should just try from three point range.
Yes.
Jimmy Hall.
You got to locate her, make her flooring, go under center and get her feet set.
Hall is light that up early at 16 to 5 was a great steal by Bernie.
But getting that pass is going to be tough to make because it's going it over.
Too many people.
You got to break the angle with that lady Wolves slow it down a bit, work it around the perimeter at Sheppard in the corner to the IT.
And Bernie is off the mark.
It comes Jefferson on the run two on one Great great great play by Bernie getting back on defense he has as he goes 94 feet by 50 them plays the whole court and of course it went off Bernie's leg so the Jefferson Ball got something he did almost a five second violation.
Here's a drive nice drive down the middle thing going the bucket for and he goes so goes it gets on the board Hey go That's what you're talking about earlier her presence on the defensive end offensive and has to come up big today Jefferson nice steal by the defense and Jefferson right by Melinda Floyd has a nice time out by Kevin Jacobs kind of slow down then him down for Jessie Jefferson he never capitalized here in the last two possessions.
Floyd misses the three pointer and the Lady Wolves bring it down the other end, Bernie, on the receiving end of that pass.
But he can't hold on and Jefferson will take over.
She tried to shoot it before somebody you got to watch with your hands, catch it with your thumbs and it goes straight up and late.
In case you're just joining us, Jefferson is in the blue going from your television screen right to left and Wesleyan in the gold uniforms going from left to right.
Jefferson's pingpong in their post, players enough to move.
Bobby Johnson replacing Ashley Adams.
There's a single so far when you hit the 60% I say something makes it off the task but you got to see here some of those shots are coming from no, they're not getting Bernie on some cuts to the basket.
But they're shooting some perimeter jump shots.
Jenny Hogg gets called for that personal right there.
There you see it.
If you're trying to block a shot, take your inside and go over the opponent's outside shooting.
You never touch him.
You're looking at this about these post.
She likes him from the outside, but boy, she can drive the lane and causes fouls.
That's what we said earlier in the broadcast.
She's got a great job in the capacity of getting that thing inside.
Plus, she can shoot the jump from the outside.
She's got great body control.
The ball's for the second of two today.
As you know, a lot of great scores at that scoring mentality.
Well, you know, every day when they wake up, they're going to put points in the books.
Again, it probably applies to wolves, Bernie, with the shot off the mark and a good defensive rebound by Jefferson's Stacey Childress down the other end as follow goes to try to get it up there couldn't do it and look on the wolves almost a steal on the far side now the jumper by Beasley excuse me by Shepard is good even though the Shepard Wesley is hitting his shots.
Coach Jackson's got to be happy with that because I hope she's all right.
Letters tumbled into the sideboard there, trying to say that loose ball so I can take a look at this block here.
She made it got her with the body.
There may have been a foul a miss.
That was she did a nice job of blocking and keeping the ball in play goes the had a clear shot at the at the rebound there but couldn't quite convert Mickey Luckhurst the company was super soft Paxton what first on the sideline not a twist of an ankle or knee this floor drops about four inches from the side of the floor to the floor with the ice to be and the wolves working around on an Eric Pass.
But it looked like it went off.
A Jefferson player Bernie stepping back into the shots.
We might be able to get a report from Jon Nelson here in a few minutes on Mickey Luckhurst Kenny Hall with the drive stops and pops and it's off the mark.
But we have a whistle and you never want to find the jump shooter.
But again, as I've mentioned earlier, Michigan's got to be happy that the shot selection that Wesley is getting here, they're shooting perimeter jump shots now.
They're making them, but it's better than getting killed.
Bang inside by Sheppard Stringer and Bernie G. Hall with that soft touch, makes the first of teams 19 to 9.
Wesley and in front and hall converts coming up strong today never touch the rim.
Well she is rock steady there's a tried and long pass again this time they get it down low Anderson is missed by some bush they caught him a little asleep there.
But again, that's a risky pass.
And Stacey Childers has made that pass a number of times.
And that's one of the first ones that she's connected to.
A nice power move by Sonny Bush in the box.
Mickey says the right system back in the game.
Well, I tell you what, we've got a great technical team here, too.
All weekend long on the guys got the best.
I mean, you've got to love the job they're doing.
There's super every angle covered.
Even then, I mean, you add the ball goes to the WHO game here the next time you hear that.
I mean, it sounds great.
Super job technical group.
All right.
Here come The lady was a23 zone.
Nicki Locker's checked back in, so she seems to be doing pretty well.
Half court execution is going to be a major baseball game.
Both teams, it's almost like a intrasquad scrimmage because they do such a great job of mirroring each other's best qualities.
Hurt it down low, misses the shot, and Jefferson comes up with the rebound and here come the Lady Dragons off the break.
Look to slow it up just a bit.
Nice pass down low to Sonny Bush.
Well, a lot of that is the pressure on the perimeter there.
They're going to back off Childress that much he's got to open alley to see through that.
It's like Dan Marino sitting back in the pocket without a rush.
She's sitting there.
She can reach the floor.
She can knock that pass down.
Sonny Bush on the line, sitting to the first of two is good.
He's getting to a little bit of foul trouble here for Anna Sheppard takes a rest.
Catherine Stringer now in the game, It's a heck of a luxury to bring in one string and put in another one.
Isn't that nice?
Azar's got one heck of a program for a team like that.
They're 84 and one all their whole Bulls programs from the elementary school up.
What an incredible story.
An incredible story.
For years, Kenny Hall from downtown Mrs. Griffin's Jefferson Clinton and the transition the first stop close it down Childress left side it goes to the children side.
Jimmy there's the cut Nice nice backdoor pass to leave the bulls in second base and how that happened as they slash to the low post cutter.
So they sent a cutter replaced the cutter with an explanation.
Opening up that zone for the pass lady was gone for the last shot of the quarter.
Here's birdie on the drive Yes big time score Patterson seen 31 a great shot by Burns and Leslie and they need it after one quarter 20 to 15 second quarter action coming up after these messages and word from GPB funding for broadcast of the GHC boys and girls basketball championship is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA basketball championships on TV.
There you see the exciting cheers from the Lady Dragons rooting for the team.
All right, let's go courtside to Jon Nelson, all Johnny G. Couple of injury updates.
We'll start with Sonny Bush.
They said that the knee sometimes just gives out for her and it's not something necessarily to be worried about.
As you saw, she came back out on the floor, Nicki Luckhurst, they're saying it's a mild sprain, maybe twisted.
Obviously, she's back out on the floor.
She's going to get it out.
And there's a guy sitting in Section 108 who heaved a big sigh.
Relief.
That's her father, McLucas, former kicker with the Falcons.
He's here in attendance today.
All right.
Thanks, John.
Jon Nelson, our doctor and medical reporter for Georgia Public Television to broadcast of the championship games.
All right.
We start the second quarter action.
Jerry Hall quarterbacking the team from the top of the key.
She launches from three point line and it's good Kenny Hall and the reason she's getting that open jump shot is because they're putting Luckhurst on one wing and Bernie on the other, which is spreading out the perimeter for Jefferson.
And she's been able to step right in that gap and knock down that three pointer.
Lady Dragons working around the perimeter and good defense by Nicky Luckhurst.
He's got great hands.
She moves so well.
Lee Tebow's inbound and they work it around the box and one again covering the bows man to man.
Everybody else is playing zone in an area matching up Childress with the ball looking down low.
They continue trying to get that ball down low to the low post.
They had great success when they flashed the opposite low post up and then cut the cutter behind that point and shoulders playing basically a game of catch up there at the top of the key.
We're going to those up screens.
That's what a great shooter does.
It runs and she also knows how to shoot, but she's a little off the mark on that one.
Loose ball lady.
Wolves down the floor and the dragons are on the floor and a jump ball.
The possession now goes to Jefferson.
Moving without the basketball.
Jamie is a lost art.
You've got to you cannot stand still in this game.
You've got to move.
So the big crowd here, the most recent Raider title game, Step back in the basket.
Nice pass by Evans.
Childress drives off the mark loose ball underneath He's going to get it.
It's Stringer with the ball.
Ernie stops it Pops has it blocked Great defensive play by Stacy Childress turnaround jumper is off the mark literally goes up and she saved the ball Did you see it through the likes of Davison?
That's not the ball.
Stop the ball.
Come on.
Nice job.
They never stopped the ball.
So she didn't pick up a dribble.
That's a great play.
She gave it a little stutter step and that's what faked out the deep super job.
Don't pick up your dribble until it stops.
My latest one, Lindsey Hickson.
Downtown Banjo's right arm wrestling and leads it down by nine over Jefferson 2718.
Here's Burnie 94 out one in hall from long distance off the mark Luckhurst Nice pass of looking man and the kick of the final string of staying longer stays with it and puts it home.
Jefferson gets it down quickly.
Evans can't hold onto it down low.
Here come the lady wolves.
Stop the ball.
Stop the ball.
Three point attempt is off the mark by Anna Shepherd.
Great rebound and a loose ball foul.
Looks like this one might go against Burnie.
Wesley does a real nice job on the offensive end due to the fact that Burnie can handle it.
So she's dribbling it and she draws the defender.
Now she's kicking it to all four lovers who are spotting up for that three Yesterday's championship games There you see the single play Final Tally County beat Buford.
The double eight game was east half beating Calhoun 78 to 67 triple-A Westover wins it over Mitchell Baker 7844 48 already a winner over Mays and the five eight championship game played late last night.
Flip Moore wins it in a plus one over 70.
Jefferson continues to move the ball around the perimeter to attack Loyd attacking this time and in one zone, you guys take the slides at this zone, you'll have open jump shots really off the mark as he tries a three pointer.
Here comes Berry to West, he gets a rebound.
Three that means the break starts because he can handle so low blockers tries to hand off the ball.
That doesn't work.
Here comes Jefferson and we have a whistle on the transition and looks like Childress was called the steps.
FOX You can listen and watch all of the state playoff games on the internet.

All games will be available for an entire month.
That's w WW dot gpb dot org.
So enjoy the games even for a month after they're over.
Credible.
I don't worry about one zero.
Nice move by hall underneath but he misses the layup and here comes Jefferson and Jefferson will run when given the opportunity Nice block down there by Bernard Jefferson spreading underneath for some offensive rebounds Ozzie Johnson was fouled underneath He gives it a little inside punch He goes for 16 burn he got hit in the face there was tried to block that last shot Looks like coach Azar's going to bring in Stringer for Bernie.
Yup, here comes Stringer.
I'm going to take a shot here.
I think one under 4 minutes to go to halftime.
This one's going by Greg Klein.
Now that just shows you the very well-coached teams and not a lot of cheap fouls and the play continues to go whistling by 1029 and one press here at Coach Jacobs and we got a foul in the front court You can live with that fouled Yeah that's a hustle foul ball players are going for the ball Yes you're not too upset with that one but those ones that drive you crazy are those reach ones that are 88 feet from the basket.
Those make you old.
There's Coach Jacobs yelling out some signals to his team and Coach Wesleyan.
See there again, they didn't let her get her feet set on that one.
You cannot let her set up all day or she'll drill them all night on the transition.
Here come the Lady Dragons.
0.43.
Wind up jumper.
Nancy from the seven.
Get out on the three and here comes in and goes it back into the game replacing Andre Johnson for Jefferson Celtics and here there it is And there's goes it's what a great play by coach David Lewis next action against Seneca to replace the cutter dragging that down little two one pressure again there's a three point shooting so far wrestling 50% that's shooting 75 from the floor.
He's going to be mighty tough to beat people shooting 50% from the three against that 2 to 1.
Jim, you want to have a cutter flash to the middle so you can throw there and skip opposite, Then you can bring up the ball, I would imagine, by shooting all these threes.
The lady wolves are also setting it up where Jefferson Defense might start coming out on him.
And if they start doing that, they can start driving the link.
My goodness, I'm as well give you my head says, Go sit down, Great job.
You know, I've learned a lot from you over this weekend.
You know, that's fabulous.
Bernie has the box in the corner.
Here comes Jefferson under Slingo told him first half the ball has great defensive feet.
What a nice move it is.
Again, Composability is a school that gets an eight inches taking that ball, finding the seed, getting in there and scoring just won't be denied and Coach wants to talk about it.
Consistency like that.
Last thing is he can't be happy that they took the ball from the wing and drove away.
They start to hit a layup.
I mean, that's not going to make anybody happy.
But again, that's the innate ability of a scorer.
They're going to find a way to get it done.
All right.
Let's hear what Coach Jacobs has to say.
Here's a replay of the last basket.
Finally, the Bose Shepard has to come there and seal that baseline on.
All right, here's Coach Jacobs here.
Go through your head to The last thing I called was don't turn your head.
So you got to see the ball.
I think if you turn your head, they're going to go back door.
You always want ball you in the man with what a coach Azar said to a team why she called timeout He said defensively we got to tighten up a little bit that you know, you can't have anybody go from the sideline all the way down to the baseline for a shot.
You know, we're too good for that.
This is one our offensive shot.
Hey, let's get something inside here.
Luckhurst swings it back outside the hall.
Hall looks to drive, stops and pops and it's off the mark.
And we have a loose ball comedy series.
As I mentioned earlier, when it was like I said, 2 minutes into the game when Wesley was shooting all these jump shots, however they were going in.
That wasn't all bad for Coach Jacobs, because if you've got these guys shooting mostly on the perimeter and they're not banging it inside, you got to like that because they're going to shoot 75% or 50% bogey.
He just doesn't make sense.
That was on Terry Paxton and he goes up to the line Jefferson through a nice job of getting west and they shoot the shots.
They want those.
It misses the front end of the run and run out of that play.
Yeah.
Hall called four steps on that one.
Yes, he's going for the ball.
Didn't look like he had control of it, huh?
I don't go with that one.
These traditions have done a nice job throughout this whole tournament trying to get the ball and they work it around the perimeter.
This is Childress, and it goes over the top of the backboard and out of play.
Nice touches over.
Well, just like that.
Jefferson's cut the lead.
It's a six point game all of a sudden do a nice job of mixing up their defense.
Just like we said, they do a nice job offensively and defensively, recognizing and exchanging their sets and their trapping defense has really been a big help for Jefferson.
That's a big shot.
And Shepard can hit that 15 footer that's going to close a world of hurt for Jefferson under 2 minutes to go till halftime.
Boyd works it outside to Childress.
She thinks about it back out to Troy.
She's got the hot hands and one lead on the other.
I got to look at her.
Virginia is shooting the lights out here in the first half.
Melinda falls again.
I say that gets that's one way to bring somebody in the middle so they bring an impact into the middle.
Bless me, but best in counters, I guess just a nice shot blocker 6 to 3 blockers answers is covering that middle pass.
Hey, check it out.
It's like we go head to head back and forth.
We got over 3429 whistling as this game really starts to open up to cover in the middle pass.
Now it's Elvis Lopez down low.
This is Paxton off the ball hall battle score and a loose ball foul.
I believe this one's going to go against leader Those both these teams This is such great mental discipline.
I mean they're so smart fun to watch at DeVos does get the personal foul It's her first under a minute to go first half Shepard off the mark loose ball back outside hall luckhurst for three and she failed to hit the rim on the back four.
So goes to jefferson.
Even though that didn't go down.
That's the shot.
That's not a bad shot for Wesley because I've seen her.
She can knock that down all day long.
But if you're Jefferson, you got to be happy that they're post players that Wesley they're taking 15 to 18 footers because that means they're not going inside getting that higher percentage shot, which is down low.
Coach Azar says let's play for one.
There's a three point shooting on the bench, only one zone in and here comes the lady Wolves.
You such poise and moxie from freshman should a good ball movement by the lady was well coached but they're playing for the last shot We had 12 seconds to go in the first half Great high low answer Good play by the Bulls now seconds in the first half 3 seconds to the last to go oh almost by Stacy Childress a little more time I think you get about the ball a little closer then taken a 3540 footer that bounce went sky high after it hit the rim.
I thought it was going to come back down and into the net.
3429, whistling at the half and exciting first half in that.
So Hansen All right, let's go courtside.
Hello, Johnny.
Hey, G here with Kevin Jacobs.
When you broke out the press, it seemed to obviously spur things along and defense created offense for it.
Yeah.
When Bernie is in the game, we have a hard time pressing the Gazelle runner right down the middle, and we're small.
I mean, we got a54 player in the middle of the zone, so we do the best we can, put pressure on the ball and makes the speed up.
Maybe it takes him ball to the middle so we can get some rebounds, but line it up around the perimeter, shoot it against zone is not good for us, so we have to press the ball a little bit and appreciate your time.
And Jim, we'll send it to break.
Good luck.
You're down by five.
Got some work to do, but good luck.
All right.
Thanks, John.
That's the first half of the books.
Wesleyan leads it 3429 over Jefferson funding for broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball Championship is provided in part by the in This is GB TV, your PBS station serving Atlanta and all of Georgia GPD TV bringing you the best.

And there you see it.
That'll be coming up right after the single-A championship right here on TV.
All right.
Let's go courtside now and John Nelson John.
Thanks, Jim.
Here with, as he wanted me to call him Grand Puba of Jefferson High School.
Pat Blanchet, principal, I got to ask this.
His first final, final ever.
Boys, girls, what does this mean to you guys as a tremendous a tremendous opportunity.
As you can see, the community has just followed us and has been following us throughout the state playoffs.
We're a very small community about an hour outside of Atlanta, about 3500 people in the community.
We are Class A school and the community has really rallied around this.
Girls has kind of solidified the community and, you know, certain things solidify communities.
This is one this girls basketball teams really solidified the community.
And you talk about the community.
Let's talk about the high school itself.
What's it like for you wandering around suit and tie every day, getting to this point and finally realizing this point?
What's it been on the school campus like?
Everybody's been excited.
I mean, we've got teachers here that have never been to a basketball game.
We've got people that have never come to the basketball game, students and staff, they've really rallied around this team.
As I walk around the halls, I get a sense of excitement in the hallways.
As I said, this is the first time the Jefferson's ever been in a basketball state, basketball finals, either boys or girls.
And the excitement is just as hard as hard to explain.
But there's is a sense that everybody's excited.
Everybody's been talking about it all these past couple of days, and we're just very fortunate to be here.
You're talking about a 50 year old school in a town of, you know, a couple thousand people.
And it seems to get this when you get a look at it, does it seem that smaller towns seem to wrap themselves around high schools a little more than the larger schools?
I think so.
I'm originally from a small town in Indiana, and athletics is becomes a very important part and the school becomes a very important part, no matter whether it's athletics or anything dealing with the high schools.
The Jefferson community just is really enthralled and enamored with the school.
It is kind of the focal point of the whole community and Friday night football games or athletic events or academics or anything dealing with the schools.
You know, the community really comes out in support that we're just very appreciative of that.
Grandpapa, Pat Blakey, thanks for your time.
Good luck.
Second half, Indiana.
The guy knows his hoops champ.
He sure does, Johnny.
I tell you what.
Hey, Phil, we talked about it earlier in the broadcast.
And, you know, they were talking about a Johnny West Jefferson's been around for 50 years and it's their first state championship.
Wesleyan, on the other hand, we mentioned the Open.
It's only been around four years.
I just think that's an interesting story, that one school has waited so long.
And on the other hand, Wesleyan and four short years, here they are.
It's a compare and contrast situation.
But both teams are doing a super, super job.
And I like what's going, you got a great chess match going on.
You've got Jefferson.
Kent is throwing that 2 to 1.
Press the 212 press.
And then coach Azar and Wesleyan are countering that by flashing the cutter to the middle and skipping it opposite.
The second half is just going to be a dandy.
I can't wait to see it come down.
All right.
Let's go courtside now.
And John Nelson.
Let's go to the flip side.
Headmaster Zach Young at Wesleyan, years old, now four years old.
You're thinking, okay, you're ready for kindergarten.
But you guys are K-through-12 school.
What's it been like for a young school to get this far so quickly?
That's been a miracle.
We've had a series of miracles that have made it possible for us to even have a school out and be street corners.
We moved from Sandy Springs four years ago and tried to create a high school and is the first time we've ever been in this position.
So it's really unbelievable miracle for all of us and the support, even though it's spring break, you got support here from all over.
Well, the kids care about each other a lot and there's a real bond between them.
And we have this.
And every time we have an opportunity to compete and children just come out to sports.
And there's one guy that I notice up in Section 108 who's actually a father today instead of a place kicker, MC Lockers, You know, what's it like having a father like that?
You know, that kind of stature here?
Well, being where we are, we've got a number of of relatively famous fathers in our parent body, the Bach house.
Kids are out there, the lockers.
Great thing about Nick Luckhurst is he understands the role of sports and doesn't overemphasize them.
And he's very supportive, understands the mission of the school and cares about sports, but he cares about the other aspects of the school as well.
Okay.
Headmaster Zach Young, thanks for your time.
That's Wesleyan.
And right now we're heading toward the second half Wesleyan is up by five.
Jim All right, Thanks, Johnny boy.
Luckhurst Boy Koski.
You hear those names, right?
Incredible.
Hey, we have a first half action for you here.
The highlights of Wesleyan and Jefferson.
And, boy, I'll tell you an exciting first half.
And boy, Paul can shoot the ball.
She gets her feet set.
It's going to be a long afternoon.
You've got to get her to move a little bit.
Jefferson can get that far down.
Led to some good offensive double in the post.
She will score and birdie.
What a great girl.
She is the most cost effective and efficient player on the floor.
She can score in Hershey off the dribble inside outside.
Excellent chance And you can't forget Melinda Flournoy shooting from downtown.
She's really brought him back with the pressure on her jump shot and put him right back in the game.
Nicky Luckhurst made it look easy.
And Michigan, it isn't long distance inside.
Outside.
She's a glider on the floor, excellent players.
And for a freshman to have that much composure, it's just amazing.
It's three point field goal, six of 14 for Wesley.
And I think that's a big stat we're looking for second half action.
It'll be just as exciting as the first half.

We have four more games coming up after this on TV.
So if you love basketball, I hope you're in a comfortable chair.
Grab some popcorn and a cold soda or something because it's gonna be a good day of basketball.
Here we go with second half action.
So they got to keep that perimeter and that zone tighter.
Good kick off by the DuBose.
The post slows it down, waits for her team to get down there, and the shot off the mark.
Bernie grabs the rebound.
We've got a loose ball foul underneath and this one's going to go on against number 25.
Sonny Bush shot with a little quick, but he had an 18 footer.
Clinton take that first.
Here comes Jenny Hall.
She's the leading scorer so far for Wesley with 11 points Great ball game Horford three point plan now off the mark look with the rebound gets it down low and that is it misses the shot and here comes Jefferson Just be a little patient here again the run that diamond and one love is playing man to man and the Bose they have it in the other four playing a dime diamond zone now gets any zone Jim you want to have man movement, ball movement, man and ball movement you in triple penetration and you want to pick the slides and overload a side.
Here's the ball stops and pops off the mark.
Nice Had the ball good rebound Here you go.
And he goes, it puts it home and it's 3431.
Anytime you give a team second and third shots, you're going to pay Bernie on the move out to Hall She thinks about the three now throws down low Nice pass in the second half just missed by Stringer even though she missed that that's a good shot Dubos down other end misses the layup loose ball underneath and the lady wolves come up with it Here's Hall looks down court intercept it by Stacy Childress time you throw that pass over a couple of people you guys you're in danger of getting picked off Childress Tim Floyd for three off the mark Here's Luckhurst end to end action here in the single-A state championship Beasley Cross court to hold it goes out of bounds Leslie is going to slow down a little bit this north and south Pace Great timeout by coach Azoff Slow down guys This is when our stuff is throwing the ball in the face.
But I really like what they're doing offensively, that being Wesley and they've got three out to in, they've got Paul in the middle they've got Bernie on one wing and luckhurst on the other.
And what they're doing is they're driving the ball to the center and kicking to that wing and when they're defensive just out, that opens up the post.
I'm.
All right.
Let's listen to coach a round the head so you got to value that basketball Two words calm down.
Yeah you've got to value that ball.
It's like gold.
That's what makes tournament action so exciting because you look up at the clock now it's 610 in the third, the first half is over.
And this game is right up going on down your side, looking around the perimeter again, this is the bow's back outside of goes to Childress Childress looks down low has nobody starts to drive passes outside the play back out to Childress goes down loaded DuBose didn't have a shot but Childress never excuse me the never stops moving You got to love that great pass by cross-court passes in these games He does Nice job of skipping the ball goes inside outside so the defense is on the weak side.
They have just to the strong side and when you reverse they got a scurry back to get on the strong side one more time.
Bernie gets called on the personal fouls then takes a seat it a screen for the screener.
Is he going to roll back to the ball carry Paxton to replace 33 Point shot is Good by Melinda Swarns.
He's making a believer out of me.
That's three points.
Roy ties the game at 34.
Hitting that offensive shot not only sets up your offense example, it sets up the defense attempted a ten second violation on the lady wolves in the Jefferson defense.
Does their job.
See, this is what I wanted to see.
I want to see how Wesley is going to react getting in a tight game late enables cakewalk through the whole season.
Basically, he's blowing people out.
I want to see how they respond in a tough situation.
Lady Dragons with a chance to take the lead.
Tebow's left wing killed.
Yes.
For three.
Yes.
Excellent.
Excellent offense.
NCC closes gives Jefferson their first lead of the game and we check that it's a two point goal.
Six 3634 Jefferson and it's turnover city now for the lady wolves feel the pressure to do a nice job one is taking the ball out of the hands of their guard as you can see.
And that's all due to the press.
All of a sudden, the guy who looks to be open all the time as opposed player, That's a super job by Coach Jacobs.
Here's that last three pointer.
Look like she stepped in line when she was a three or nine.
She had her feet set.
Whenever a shooter can get their feet set, square up their shoulders, it's a pretty good percentage shot for Childress hits the big shot.
It gives Jefferson the lead, 3634.
That's what we have on the board out here in the Coliseum.
And all of a sudden, for some strange reason, the fans of Jefferson are very excited about this one here.
They've come a long way here.
It's they've climbed up the hill.
Now what they have to guard against the three point shooting there, six for 15 for Wesleyan, four for 11 for Jefferson.
But with a guy guarding this from if he keeps coming back up that hill, up that hill, up that hill, and then you finally get the lead, you got to see how much energy that you've used.
So conditioning is going to be a factor.
But I like your point.
What you said just a moment ago.
Wesleyan hasn't had a close game all year, so it'll be interesting to see how they handle it.
Well, they're very well coached, great mental discipline.
So I feel pretty confident that Eric Jefferson with the ball they're on a seven run here in the start of the third quarter Nice pass down line gets closer, completes it nice play by and he goes down low getting position on the defense Here's Hall drives the lane dishes off right side he can walk a two point goal and it's 3836 Jefferson that was a big shot but what this press is doing taking the ball out of the West when he scores hands at pass, he's going to work.
He can't throw that ball to four people half down.
He can't handle.
Here comes Jefferson.
This is on the transition left side, three pointer good guy who's seen it goes and it's 4136.
It's Jefferson's biggest lead of the game Great pass by Paxton blockers crosscourt pass the time move the ball Lonzo trying to find that open man here it is down low but still is off the mark in love just isn't getting enough touches and he has to shoot the ball every time on the offensive end he's got to touch it.
Three point guard again nice touch by the Bose see that was all set up by Childress is great.
Skip pass Coach Jacobs happy with his girls performance here in the second half.
We run a nice scissor cut off the high post, which is given that open shoot to look right off the mark and have a foul on it is the Lady Dragons.
They're everywhere.
They're on the perimeter.
They're down low fighting for every rebound.
They put out a new team here in the second half.
Again, it's all due to the press.
This has really got them moving with it.
But I like this move by Coach Azar.
She's bringing in Bernie.
Give him an additional ball here.
Now, another thing you may want to try is have luckhurst be your secondary receiver on against that press so she can catch it in the middle and then she can take it off the dribble.
4136 Jefferson Make it 40 to 36 as Bush hits the free throw, then takes a seat.
While I like what I just heard the ball looked at, Bernie said, Come on, let's go to education of a great leader.
Here's Bernie stops and pops off the line and the rebound ball goes up and here comes Jefferson.
Notice Lady wolves are only getting one shot left versus ankle.
Seems to be a little tender.
Still again, here comes the scissor.
Cut off the high post step back and reversal in the pass.
Then they're going to flex cut down low goes up goes a hitch.
Jefferson is on a 15 to 2 run film.
They lead it by eight.
Wesley.
He just a quick basket.
They get a score here and now allow them to set up for questions.
Paul tries it from three point land off the mark one South Jefferson gets it closer with the rebound.
Get it inside.
You got the height advantage, bang it inside, then skip it outside.
Now Jefferson looks to slow it down a bit as they set up their offense.
This is DuBose looking for an open man, guarded tightly by hall swings it back outside.
This is Childress.
Here they come.
They going screen on a ball Childress with the shot good rebound by Shepard Shepard gets it out to hall and here come the lady wolves down by eight and a three pointer by Shepard is off the ball here you see the Dragons and outscored their opponents 15 to 2 in the last 6 minutes.
Jefferson looks a little quicker than Wesley that's not at this moment good ball movement open man down low Nice defense by Shepard And here comes Blake.
Three stops, feeds hall All those baseline looks for somebody underneath the shot taken by Hicks.
He's off the mark.
And here comes the lady Dragons.
One shot and go.
One shot go.
Just seems to be the way it's happened.
Here comes a flex.
You get a cross screen on one side.
Great patience by Jefferson that's Childress back outside the front in this flex offense you can have a cross being on one side and a down screen on the same side of the floor.
Great.
Get and go.
Nice play.
Whenever your man goes to double team, don't stand diagonally, cut to the front of the rim and you'll get a layup all day long.
Childress tacos and it's 2634 Jefferson make that 4636 Jefferson has done a nice job with the zone now pinching that middle so that hauling in letters can step in there and shoot open 18 footers by his last touch by Jefferson underneath.
So the lady wolves will happen to Jefferson's defense.
And as we alluded to earlier in the broadcast, in the first half, is doing a nice job of producing the shots that they want Wesley in to shoot the long perimeter jump shots.
And unfortunately for Wesley, they're just not falling moments.
And as you as the game gets tighter and RIM gets a little smaller, there's luckhurst.
I have to believe her ankle is not full strength because she's been kind of didn't have the same pop in her step on her off balance on that shot.
Here comes Jefferson.
Well, here you have it.
That's the end of the third quarter.
Jefferson makes a run.
They lead it after three quarters, 2636 on the left.
Lynch line, the fourth quarter for you after these messages from CCTV funding for a broadcast of the GHC Boys and Girls Basketball championships is provided in part by the following You're watching the NCAA Basketball championships on TV.
The Jefferson cheerleaders are very happy at this point.
Let's go courtside at John Nelson Gym.
Just spent some time listening to the Wesleyan huddle.
Janice once said point blank, if want to win this game, you've got to start rebounding.
We can't just have one shot an out.
And she's also looking to pick up the pressure defensively.
So the pace may get a little frantic here in the fourth quarter.
Back to you.
All right, Johnny.
And so you're also talking about defense first, right?
Exactly.
You're not going to outscore them here.
You get the get back in the game.
You got to put the clamps on them defensively, 17 to 2 run.
That is incredible.
Here's Hall loose ball.
Jefferson's ain't over it all their team and the possession now goes to the lady wolves Good hustle by ball Oh she is a fighter.
We go to war with her.
You see, that's just championship basketball.
I mean, they know these girls know what's on the line, the loose ball.
They're going to be fighting and falling and scratching to get it.
So far, the difference this game, Wesleyan, two points in the third quarter.
Meantime, in it goes it eight points in the third quarter.
She had a big, big quarter for her.
Again, her presence must be felt today for Jefferson to come out on top at long past Murray's knee.
That's luckhurst.
Nice pass inside.
Oh, here's Bernie.
And he's got his little gift.
That's okay.
That's where you need to go.
Establish yourself inside, then go outside.
If you live and die by that jump shot when they don't start falling.
And now, as the game starts getting tighter and tighter and as the clock starts ticking on you, that room gets smaller.
All right.
Wesleyan with the full court pressure.
Yeah, it gets pressure a little bit.
Floyd's handle isn't as strong as Childress is.
Childress guarded by two lady Wolves.
Good job.
Nice track.
Superb job by Wesson.
They used to sideline his defender, so that gave him really an extra defender.
So two guys were actually three and a smart play by Childress.
She knew she was tied up.
She called a quick time out.
Turnovers are the big story, though.
There's it that's your stat right there with seven extra turnovers And most of them came in that third quarter which produced that 72 to run.
And of course, there are your points off the turnovers.
You got to value that basketball, Jim, because when you turn over the ball and you're not only are you not getting his shot, your opponent is getting an extra possession.
So that's a double dip.
All right, Tony, push to inbound for the Lady Dragons.
That's the ball's guarded tightly by Luckhurst.
Those nice pass nice dish to Gosa and he's back outside This is Childress now John Kelly by ball now Jefferson has to There's no reason to be in a hurry They're ahead.
They've got the clock.
Just you got to play the score.
No play to sit on it but you want to play the school.
Paul's opportunity here comes to pass and here goes the Bose down the other end off the mark and a loose ball fouls can be called on Jefferson.
Oh, my goodness.
He missed the layup down on the offensive end.
They need to pick up a quick foul on the rebound.
That has to hurt.
But again, you can beat that press by throwing it inside, skipping outside or throwing over the top, which they did their 4638 line and wolves are looking to come back.
And yes, you're right, there is plenty of time yet to go in the final quarter.
Bernie, Cross-court Pass, this is Nicky Luckhurst, looking soft and low.
Stringer misses the shot rebound underneath What a play by Rudy.
She's tough.
She didn't stop moving and the shot went up.
She just didn't stand.
She went here, got inside position, got between her opponent in the back in the basket, winning there, scored and here's the replay Look at ten underneath she tough again didn't worry about the contact went through it took whoever wanted to come along for ride She scored you want to watch that ball go through the net birdie converts on the three point play and it's 4641.
All of a sudden the lead is cut in half.
Offense creates defense two balls on the other end.
There's nothing better than speed.
If you can make that one pass over the top and take it for a layup, because that's going to punish that press.
You want to attack that pressure.
Bernie hands it off just a second.
Off the mark, Mickey Luck as the rebound taken away by leave the blows.
Yeah that ankle has to be ten because she didn't have a base there to hang on to that ball So they knocked it right out of her hands.
Childress Close it down again guarded by Hall.
Childress With a nice move you got to stop that nice in addition to the pass and we had a foul on it is falling like trees now and looks like a rolled her ankle hurt there Catherine Stringer stands at six foot one years she's a sophomore and she's in pain there So she might have rolled her ankle again.
I hope she if she did turn it, she turned to the outside and inside the inside sprained it, which puts you out longer than usual.
Looks like a knee, we're told.
Here's the buzz.
She's got a great touch.
And we have Larry Evans coming in.
Take a very out from a 2 to 1 press.
Should this free throw by the bulls go down, I wouldn't imagine Bernie is going to be out too long considering there's a five foot loss.
Here comes the Cleveland.
Now bring somebody in the middle pass to pass by home.
Larry Evans can't handle it.
He goes out of bounds again.
Jefferson's making that pass appear open so.
You're throwing in over two or three people is getting deflected, George throwing out of bounds.
And again, they're throwing it towards the sideline.
If they go middle in opposite, they'll have a better chance.
Bring it up the side of the floor.
There's Childress Lady Wolves guarding Jefferson, very tight on the outside perimeter.
We got a world of times in this is Childress gets it out the floor and Jefferson shouldn't be in the crew right now.
They got to just take your time I and stuff goes in misses from the corner and it's out of bounds off and they want to look at that one again tough play because Gary Paxson didn't have a great position down look watch the cut There it is nice play but it's a big shot to get it on the play And here's Hall 5 minutes to go in the final quarter Paul for three off the mark living and dying by that jump shot Jim and the ball seems to be everywhere on the court.
She's playing hard.
She's sensing now like a racehorse lane her ears back and running Jefferson by nine and with the ball goes in the corner.
Great patience great patience.
Here's the bones.
That's a great move on the shooter's center.
Man up took her inside, popped out, come off that screen, knocked down the jumper.
That was a two point goal by the bulls.
And the lead is 11 for the Lady Dragons.
You don't have to get it all back.
It wants you dribble penetration here and then look inside and get a quick jump.
Oh, don't pass.
See they get that all day long.
The tough times.
Don Hall off the dribble look first off the dribble, breaking down and learning also city hall scores.
The last bucket for the lady was that 6243 in favor Jefferson.
But Jefferson's done a nice job with their defense, making Wesley start to stand.
Don't ask his coach, James.
He'll get in trouble and get past the single contract.
You out here?
I want you in the middle.
After we break, The freshman in the war for a pass you just never had.
How to run there.
If you can't get inbounds, we'll call a timeout.
But it's up to you right now.
We're talking about the other day.
We take care of the ball.
All right.
We don't need now.
Coach on open all the boards.
All right.
So what are they talking about?
Well, you've got Coach Azar there saying we're going to come out and get him.
I mean, just we just got it, you know, Let's go.
We got a trap.
Play hard at the foul.
If they don't call the foul, just play through it.
Now, on the flip side, Coach Jacobs is saying, look, guys, we're in great shape.
Just run what we want to run.
Let's get the ball inside and just execute our offense like we do every day in practice.
That's just inbounds.
Fines goes up.
There's a good trap, good play by Bernie.
Loose ball and ball tries to land, stops him top six down low.
Good hustle and looking fine Jerry Paxton.
Nice job on that trap.
The top man stops the ball, the bottom end shuts the door.
The trap full court pressure by the lady wills so off.
Look at this double team.
Nice time out again.
They use the sideline as a defender where two people could be three.
I can't help to think that Luckhurst his ankle isn't 100% because he's just not got that explosive pop that she had earlier in the semifinal all year long smart play by Melinda Floyd to be calling that timeout This happened twice he got the ball and here's Coach Jacobs a line let me do it again a guy get the ball only you're only up by seven now because you won't take care of the ball down there.
He's got to take care of the ball I will 80 when we get with it.
There's another in that sunny okay spicy smell any day any you go No look guys we don't have throw it in Stacey you read him.
Look, give the ball to Stacey.
Now that's a double team.
Stacey.
So you got to come back to the middle.
Lee You got to find it.
So looks like Coach Jenkins is showing them how to break that press a little bit better than what they've been doing it Exactly.
Because what's happened here, coaches are saying Childress isn't going to beat us with the dribble, so we've got to get it out of her hand, make someone else bring the ball up the floor, then get the trap on that side.
Here comes alive, play, watch the post, go right up the middle and get it.
Trevor Childress looking for the open man and they get four inbounds to push the what the sideline.
Well I like the way Wesley's trapped in here They're using all the lines on the floor as a defender They brought her this time Childress that being they brought her to the halfcourt line where that was a defender.
So that had to pick that pass.
Be rushed.
Excellent.
Excellent execution.
Here's your timeouts remaining.
Jefferson.
Wesley.
Both with two.
They have both taken their 30 seconds already.
Well, it's going to be a chess match, Jim.
Down the stretch, lady Wolves can cut it to five, possibly even four.
There's a trace.
And that's what she got to see.
Luckhurst for three.
That's her leg.
She can have the legs into that shot.
But that's what they did early in the game.
They dribble, penetrated and kicked it.
We're getting those open jump shots, but nobody contested them in the second quarter, third quarter and a little bit in this quarter.
They were standstill in that movement as much and.
Couldn't get a rhythm going forward.
Fouled by Shepard.
Oh, that's not a bad play.
It stops the clock now They've got to inbound the ball now they can get a press situation here using the halfcourt line and the sideline A defender were two can be four and one can be three here and comes up with the steal for then Jefferson Jefferson comes right back with it.
Here's the both on the baseline.
Great play great play by Paxton got outside that lane and took that charge again the press set that up, got them a little out of control.
And here came the help from the offside.
Excellent job, lady Wolves.
Tell it by 7 to 3 zone by just 3 minutes to go.
Got to getting that get hole for three and it goes out of bounds All out press here take over get tested by the lady wolves Nice job Bring it down to the middle You see they're going to miss the point guard with the second receiver call comes up at the intersection on defense and brings it down the other end.
Oh, to Shepard.
He's going to take it to the basket.
His job take it 50 to 47 quarters has to go in the final quarter all alone.
On the other end is Melinda Blight.
Listen, this is going here come the lady wolves with a chance to cut it to three, three.
Love for his knees.
Let's give her a little trouble.
One person three point lands off the bat off the mark and it goes out of bounds.
Off Jefferson to the Pacers, getting a little rowdy here.
They need to slow down.
That being Jefferson.
Let Leslie in play 1000 miles an hour.
That's fine.
You've got the ball, you've got the lead.
Let them come and get you.
You run your stuff.
On the flip side, Wesley has got to speed them up, get them excited and then execute down low.
Offensively, they jump back in there pressing in.
Every time you score, it sets up your defensive tempo.
2 minutes to go in the final quarter.
Luckhurst back out hall.
Luckhurst they work it around.
She doesn't have the explosive step that she did earlier and she went down.
Here's Luckhurst for three again off the mark here found 30 different home and we have a loose ball foul underneath and this one's going against intercepted when a shooter gets tired and loses their legs or they hurt their legs, that really hurts.
And you can get away with a hand injury either with the Bose, it has a wrist, but when legs go, you don't have that power.
That base on the shot clock pressure again by the lady wolves.
Do they bring in Childress now as a secondary receiver on this press?
Now she can bring it up.
She gets it to the Bose in the clutch.
Now they got a chance to slow it down ground and a half minutes to go.
A five point lead for the Lady Dragons and they can slow it down.
Now they're going have to come out and get them here.
And here's the foul by Lucky.
That's all.
That's the foul.
They're going at the foul against 030.
Got to get the initial steal and then they got to the great foul Johnson Florida's foul by Mary Evans.
Now you're going to see same drill again so now going to be able to see if the lady dragons cat and mouse game here now what you want if she can get it in you don't need to come down and start taking a bunch of threes right off the bat, banging inside.
Get a quick two then.
Now you can set up your defense.
Go for the steal.
If you don't get it foul, put them back on the line.
Now they got to knock down those free throws a little pressure on but if you just come down and start taking a bunch of threes what happens here is you start playing behind the power curve and you just can't catch up because you miss the three.
Now you have to fall and then that brings them down to the other end.
With that first question down, pick throws by Melinda Flush, the lead is back to seven 5447 Jefferson There you see the clock last 15 to go a lot of time wolves working around the perimeter of the pass and 30 for three off them on the shooting executive you said sitting ready they've got to get get inside and go out and the system jumps out and on a second took steps.
All right.
Now they get the foul here.
Now, Jefferson, be patient.
Come to the ball, come strong.
Don't wait for the pass like that.
You can't wait for the pass blockers to birdie.
And the lead is 554 nine under a little better good by Lucas and a smart play by Stacy Childress as she calls a time out as she was double teamed by Hall and Luckhurst on the near sideline.
But Wesley does a real nice job of funneling you to that sideline or to the half 49 or to the baseline where they can use that line as an extra defender, almost like your best friend.
Just the nonsense with the basketball.
Okay, they're good enough.
They'll pick it off.
If they hit a three year win, something will give up the late we've got the ball.
We won't lie.
We still have one more time out.
I wouldn't do this.
Good job right there.
Then will have to foul you.
Okay?
Okay.
And coach isn't Think to go back to sleep in the exit film.
One of the things we were talking about is Wesley and taking three pointers in the fourth quarter.
OSU seven on threes living down of that jump shot as you get little tired, your legs go in the shot, start a little short.
All right.
46 seconds to go.
And the lady Dragons trying to hold on against the lady Wolves.
Good foul.
Good stops the clock.
41 seconds to go.
That's an excellent play.
We're going to be here last luckhurst 030.
Hey, folks, The hottest new program to air on PBS is coming soon.
14 high school students captured their lives on video.
Don't miss America in high beginning April 4th, right here on TV.
You got to get those down, Jim.
40 seconds to go, lady Wolves on the run.
34.
Sweet.
After 1903, Paul Looking for three now.
Flutters for three.
Sanders hits one big shot 6450.
The lead is four with 27 seconds to go and another time out, as Paul looks for touches out, maybe like just a press a little bit.
Give him a little different look and try to trap that initial fast and foul immediately.
Yeah, we're on five.
Mary Chicken.
Very, very character out of you Get on your back you get on Childress you guys they see straight down nailed for the quarter What's the charge You got to get about five feet in the player on the side.
You're too close to the sideline.
Okay.
They're trying to take a chance.
You heard you were talking earlier about how Jefferson made a run.
Meantime, the Lady Wolves are an 11 two run here in the closing moments of the fourth quarter 20 seconds to go.
Now, when you receive this pass, you catch this pass going to the ball and make sure you're not below the second marker, because then the sideline on the baseline become a defender.
There you see Jefferson by team.
Watch the thought of going long.
There she is fouled Great defense by hand until it gets it 18 seconds to go Jackson has to take the numbers and a foul in the back post and the bulls will go to the end where you got a lot of times it was only a two point ball 30 seconds.
Now they got to come down and make these free throws in a pressure situation.
Well, you don't need to come down and race down to get a quick three.
Even if they do go down, bang it inside because their coach is saying, Coach Jacob, don't foul, don't foul, don't foul.
So you can get in there, get a quick score, then throw that press on.
If you didn't get the steal, great.
If not found and you bring them back to the line, you may think about shooting the three.
There you see the bulls is five of six on the line.
Big free throw here 20 points.
So now it's a three point game 5552 clutch player, one possession ballgame and still a one possession ballgame.
Here we go.
10 seconds to go.
Oh, they got to go with about 8 seconds now.
32 seconds, afternoon rebound.
It is a loose ball and it this now is facing towards the lady Jefferson will get the ball with 2 seconds to go Wow that could have been over the back ball there they got it foul immediately and a timeout and that's something the coach is calling for over the ball.
Well you know I thought that backs head inside position there Tough play by the lady wolves so they're going to have a trap immediately here.
There's a three point attempt by Shepard.
She thought she's inside of her.
She's over the back.
Nick Evans got her only 2 seconds to go on the single-A state championship.
Here's coach Jacob Hardy right there.
I want Mayo here.
This is what I want.
Male take on Stacy.
You go.
All right, take it and throw it all the Don't throw it out of bounds, coach.
All right, You got Ashley.
And so you're coming to me now.
If you're Western and you're guarding the inbounds play.
On if she's a righty, play on her right here so she can step in and throw you.
So now she's got to go across her body with the throw.
Can she run the baseline here?
No, it's that bad situation.
So watch.
There's the steel.
Now she's gotten and it's up to Malcolm.
I believe the shot was after the buzzer.
Here's the game.
The Sumo championship is on the books and the Jefferson Lady Dragons of the season state champions they win it 6552 over the Lady Wolves of West Team.
What a gutty little team.
Both teams are just excellent excellent programs.
There's waited over 60 years.
It's their first basketball state championship and Jefferson a fantastic game and it puts Jacobsen's welcome before he can't believe it there's nothing like that is if you're a coach.
It's just a wonderful, wonderful scene.
All right, let's go to courtside.
John Nelson.
Done.
Okay.
Officially, I see four zeros on that clock.
You did win this game.
How is it feeling right now?
You know, they're a great team.
You know, I really when they got up on that shooting spree in the first quarter, we got a little worried.
We our kids, you know, we're small.
We come from a small town.
We have a great following here.
If you'll work hard like you have to do everyday life, the good things will happen to you.
And they did.
And you got to hand it to them.
I mean, they came through the clutch.
We got a little nervous at the end when they started press this, but those are young kids trying to in a big place that they've never been in these experiences before.
So really good job.
I'm proud of the kids.
It's good.
Talk a little bit about this experience being under the big top here.
What's this whole thing been like for you?
You know, our kids are like was telling you earlier, you know, today at practice, they were really quiet.
And I worry about that because they're usually pretty loosey goosey.
And and I don't think this bothers them a whole lot.
They love this.
They love some attention.
They deserve it.
You know, they won the state championship in softball.
They've won one in basketball now.
And and you got to hand it to them.
They were really, really hard.
And you talked about a little bit elaborate for me.
What does this mean to Jefferson High and to the city of Jefferson?
Oh, anytime in a small community you can win a state championship.
You know, in the community, it's a community thing.
I mean, they wanted to our girls perform, but it's still a community.
And and we're proud of that.
Everybody coming out here and then and the kids and Childress and and DuBose and Ashley Evans are only seniors in and you got to hand it to them.
I mean, it's hard to think right now, words to say, but, you know, look at them.
They're excited.
And that's what it's about.
That's what the game is about.
It is a game coach Jackets, Congratulations.
Go get that x ray now and lead about to send it back to you.
That's the first championship of the day.
All right, John, thanks very much.
Phil Henson, thanks for a great job.
Once again, the championship for the books.
Jefferson wins it, 5562 Double-A games.
