Welcome to our annual GHSA Cheerleading State Championships special program!
I'm Ashley Mengwasser.
- And I'm Chelsea Phillips Tafoya.
I guess you could call this show seasonal.
- Cheer seasonal, Chelsea.
This year's event was hosted for the third time at the Macon Centerplex in the epicenter of our state.
- The heart of cheerleading.
There were feet stomping, hands clapping, beats dropping and cheerleaders popping.
It's the best pulse I've ever felt, Ashley.
- Oh yeah, GHSA Cheer is a living, breathing, glittering being.
- Got that right, but there were new rhythms afoot with the changes to the sport, right?
- So true, Chelsea, changes to the perfect score, a reclassification which moved many schools around and it all begins in single-A.
Since 2012, A has been divided into Public and Private.
Now it's just A.
Former A-Public champions Gordon Lee moved up to triple-A and former A-Private champions Mt.
Paran competed in double-A.
What squad would take the birthday cake for new baby A?

What was your squad's regime for success today?
- Do your job.
We were excited that over and over for every full out, for every competition, we always just said do your job.
Well, if you do your job, you ain't gotta worry about nothing else.
- Everybody did their job.
- Yes, ma'am.
Coach Stamey, over to you.
What skills does this squad have that they performed exceptionally well today?
What are they best at?
- Our tumbling today, I really think that's what separated us.
We were a little worried 'cause we did have a little bobble in stunts, but I really think our showmanship and our tumbling is what came through for us.
- Well, you proved that there was nothing to worry about today.
Congratulations, Armuchee!
- Thank you.
(squad cheers) - Congratulations to Armuchee who placed third in A-Public last year, their top score was 91.5.
Pepperell came in second with 90 and third with the same score was Commerce, followed by Bleckley County, Swainsboro and Lake Oconee Academy.
- Mm, I love cheer, always keeping us on our toes.
And now to class double-A where some of our reclassified A competitors stand out.
Only half a point separated the top two teams in double-A.
That math makes me sweat.

Paran Christian, our double-A State Championships.
This is your 11th consecutive win, so wow!
I mean, quad, quadruple, quadruple.
I can't even think of what that win is to you.
Of course you really are all about a culture of championship both on that mat and off of it.
Tell us a little bit about that.
- Well, we try to keep our focus on our heavenly Father and we continue to seek to perform for an audience of one every single time that we take the mat.
This year, we went up in classifications to double-A, so we knew it was gonna be a really difficult journey, but it's been a great journey and these girls have worked really hard.
They haven't let their foot off the gas and this was the perfect time to peak.
And we're just so extremely proud of them.
- Absolutely, we felt that energy and we felt that effort right there.
And of course, it's all about the togetherness that comes together and you guys are led by four seniors.
What was that like coming off of that on that mat?
I mean, I could see it in your eyes.
At what moment did you guys really know that you had it in the bag?
- Well, I think it's just really like she said, audience of one and just focusing on who we're doing it for.
And when we do put our focus on God, it just helps us bring home that win like we have.
And I think that's the unique thing about us is that we just have a bigger purpose for it.
- Congratulations to you guys.

Paran Christian said we ain't going home without a title in any classification.
Those Eagles swooped in for a win with 96 points.
Pierce County stood tall with 95.5, Kipp Atlanta Collegiate scored 90.5.
In fourth fell Fellowship Christian with Vidalia and Dodge County also making the Top 6.

(squad cheers) Sarah, talk to me about the encouragement with the team.
- It's State and everybody has so many nerves.
And the only way to really help get yourself out of those nerves is to cheer each other on and let each other know mentally that you're always gonna be there for them and always gonna be cheering for them and it just really helps the whole team out if you're just yelling for each other.
And it just shows that you're accounted for and people are focused on you to hit.
- Absolutely, Coach Bowers, Coach Edgy.
Now, what they were focused on is y'all's energy out there.
I saw y'all doing the moves and jumping up and down.
Talk to me about what happens off season 'cause that's what really shows up right here on this mat.
- We've been together since June.
It has been amazing working with these girls.
Ups, downs, left, rights, but they have pulled through so much.
They started strength and conditioning this summer, which some of them were like, "Rita, why'd you do that to me?"
But it all paid off.
We are super excited.
This is a goal that we set for ourselves beginning this season and by the grace of God, we accomplished that goal.
So we're so excited.
- We always have the same goal, but this team really wanted it and we all achieved it, we all worked together.
Like she said, strength and conditioning.
Nobody complained, everybody was ready to go for it and anything that we've ever asked them to do extracurricular, they've put in effort and time.
And I feel like that really pays off and it shows how bad they really wanted it for each other.
- Absolutely, give it up for yourselves!
(squad cheers) In a flourish, Savannah Christian, who placed second in A-Private last season, ascended a new throne with a score of 102.
Mary Persons was six points behind at 96.
Gordon Lee earned 94.5 points.
Columbus, Bremen and Dawson County round out the Top 6.
Ashley, who brought in quad-A?
- Here is a hint.
The name of our quad-A champion includes one of the four elements of earth and they definitely got that W on the mat and by name.
In this classification, our top three schools turned out some very close scores.

(squad cheers) - With all the classification changes in 4A, it was basically anybody's title today, but Whitewater said, us first.
Coach, how are you feeling today?
Tell us a little bit about what was going through your mind and what qualities you feel like this team had that made them a title team in a brand new classification.
- This team, I can't say enough good things about this team.
This has been a dream team since day one.
After tryouts, they made some decisions about some difficult stunts they wanted to do and they wanted to be the first to do it.
And when they set their mind to it, there was no stopping them.
And I couldn't be more proud of them today.
- [Ashley] Thank you, Coach Frazier.
Kerri, you're a senior.
- Yes.
- [Ashley] First of all, are you okay?
- I'm just overjoyed, no words to explain it.
- [Ashley] They are tears of joy.
What went right for you all on the mat out there today?
There was a beautiful synchronicity going on.
- Well, one thing about us, we're always gonna talk on the mat.
We always talk on the mat, we always know what to say to each other, we always know how to encourage each other.
So it always goes right every time we compete.
- [Ashley] It's really disposition and you had the winning disposition.
Congratulations, Whitewater!
(squad cheers) The floodgates open for Whitewater and we were washed in the spirit.
Just around the riverbend was close contender West Laurens in second, a half point away.
Starr's Mill stuck third with 100.5, followed by Central, Carroll and Cedartown.
And North Oconee sits sixth.
- Mm-hm, cheerleaders are fierce athletes who easily shake off muscle injuries, high falls and painful landings.
- They do, but we're not dealing with cheer robots, cheerbots.
Can you imagine that, Chelsea?
These are cheer humans who are vulnerable to ails and ills of the body.
- Mm-hm and for that, we bring you a tale of two cheerleaders, each fighting a menacing threat while keeping their cheer intact.
(light music) - Here at Ola High School, a brain cancer warrior is battling the big C to keep the other big C in her life, cheer.
Abigail Tatum has a lot on her mind, the cheerleading championships and her brain tumor, George.
- About five years ago, I was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
It was cancer, so me and my parents decided just to name it George just for fun, just to keep some kid-friendly vibes going on.
But this past June, it decided to come back and we were like, well, do we wanna change the name?
And I was like, absolutely not.
- Still George.
- It's still George 'cause it's still the same thing.
- [Ashley] True to form, Abby exemplifies the leader in cheerleader.
- My mindset, it makes me believe that this is just one step into creating something bigger for people to see that you can do anything, no matter what gets thrown at you.
- [Ashley] Abby's, "Put me in coach," is met with a resounding, yes.
- Her strength has pushed us to a bigger meaning.
You're not coming out here just to do five, six, seven, eight.
You're coming out here 'cause you have a teammate struggling and you wanna do it for her.
Do it for the person next to you.
She has such a presence with them and a calm that it makes them rise to the occasion and she's such a loving person.
Her energy radiates through them.
- [Ashley] Amaya, what do you admire about Abby?
- Definitely her strength, like how she comes on this mat every single day, pushes through bad days of chemo, good days of chemo.
She just pushes through with all of her strength.
- [Ashley] What do you think's gonna happen at State, Coach?
- I hope-- - We'll pray!
- Yeah, I hope it's what we want.
We hope we peak at the right time.
No matter what happens, we hope they execute what they have been coached since June and hope that they build and boost each other up, no matter what happens out there and they leave with the accomplishment that we see in them every day.
- And you'll show George who's in charge around here.
- Absolutely.
- Yes.
- Do it for Abby.
Abby on three, Abby on three.
- [Squad] One, two, three, Abby!
(squad claps) - But this is a tale of two cheerleaders.
Host Chelsea has the other story.
- It takes strength and perseverance to aim for a state title.
One face in the crowd is fighting an inspiring battle on and off the cheer mat.
- If I could compete, I would.
I really wanna be out there, but I'm just glad that I was able to stay and watch them.
I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
I just started chemo Monday, so I'm a little weak.
- [Chelsea] Even while feeling weak, Madison is a strong influence.
- She's just such an inspiration 'cause she just always keeps a positive attitude.
And I'm just so proud of her for staying strong and staying positive through the whole thing.
- Knowing her story and learning about what she recently is going through, it's just made that be our motivator of drive.
Madison here, we doing it for Maddie.
- I know being sad isn't gonna change anything.
There's no reason to mope around 'cause I can't change it and I have to be there for my friends for as much as they've been there for me.
- [Chelsea] Being there for Maddie is exactly what Johnson County did.
- We all wore teal to school and to the football game 'cause that's for ovarian cancer awareness.
- We had a big wide school day for Maddie.
Everybody wore teal colors and the whole cheer squad, we had these For Maddie shirts that we wore throughout October.
And we knew she wasn't gonna give up, so we couldn't give up either.
- Seeing everybody come together to be there for me is really heartwarming.
- We thank you so much just for your energy, your spirit and your essence and I saw it all throughout your team as they performed just now.
- Thank you.
As soon as I get done, I plan to get back in the gym and build my muscle back up 'cause I gotta get back out there.
- She's leaving her legacy, she's leaving that mark on our squad that, hey, we can keep going, we can fight because she's doing it.
- Makes people realize that you shouldn't take stuff for granted.
What she's going through, they can be going through something different and just don't take nothing for granted.
- Abby and Maddie's teams did not win State, but they did win our hearts.
We're with you, ladies.
- Mm-hm, they're my heroes!

You guys were Cheerleading Team of the Year as well as winning, and this is a fourpeat.
- It is.
You talked to me about the theme back then.
Talk to me about this year's theme and how we just saw it play out with that win.
- Our theme this year is magic and they make the magic happen out on the mat and in their hearts and as a team.
And we just thought it would just be magic if we could possibly have a fourpeat this year.
And we did and it's just a magical feeling and I love these kids.
- Absolutely, we feel the energy and the emotions.
Of course, we have our senior Maddie Claire.
Talk to us about how you helped to lead that team to that victory.
- Well, first off, I would just like to say, there's so much love on this team.
All of us, we're individual leaders.
We helped each other push through blood, sweat and tears to get this fourpeat.
There was a lot of magic on the mat today and we just wanted to show everybody and go out with a bang.
- [Chelsea] Ooh, you went out with a bang.
Go out with a bang now and celebrate!

Congratulations on your fourth consecutive 5A title, won with 106 points.
Cartersville landed second with 104.
In third was Northgate capturing an even 100.
And Greenbriar placed fourth with 95.5, then Jefferson and Cambridge.

(squads cheer) - I'm here with 6A Champions Houston County with their first title in about 10 years.
Kysa, describe the feeling of knowing you just gave your best performance out there on the mat today.
- It's an undescribable feeling.
Me and my teammates have worked so hard this whole entire season to be consistent at every single competition and every single practice in the practice room.
And it's just the most amazing feeling in the entire world to know that I did it with the people that I love so much.
- Coach Leaptrot, tell me, you're starting a new tradition, a legacy even, potentially.
Where could you go from here with this squad?
- Well, tonight, we're gonna go home and we're gonna celebrate with our administration, our athletic director, our school staff, the girls, their families.
We have the biggest support system back home in Houston County and they showed up here today.
And we're gonna get back to work for the next season.
- [Ashley] Hard work, it'll pay off next year, too.
- Yes.
- [Ashley] All right, congratulations, Houston County!
(squad cheers) Houston County was footloose and cheer tight.
This team had the highest score of the all-girl competition classes where the new perfect score is 108.
HoCo brought it with 107 points.
Second place North Forsyth was not far behind at 104 and third place Lanier's 100 point performance.
Allatoona came in fourth with South Effingham and Johns Creek hitting the 90s.
- Mm-hm, for the past seven years in 7A, power has oscillated exclusively between Lambert and South Forsyth.
South Forsyth gave the peak performance in 2021, but which cheer legend will dominate at State in 2022?

(squad cheers) Coach Caroline, I have to say that was one of the most creative and incredible routines I have ever seen, especially in the air.
Please talk to us about what went into your head with putting that together.
- Well, so when we started the season, we actually sat down and we talked to everybody and we said, we can take an easier route and we can do just what's required of us or we can risk it, we can go for harder stuff and we can push the limits of what we're capable of and what Georgia High School is.
And every single person here chose to go for the harder stunt.
And what we do this season, the hand-in-hands, has never been competed at Georgia High School before and they just went out and crushed it.
So we're really, really excited, really, really proud of what we put on that floor today.
- Absolutely, congratulations, breaking records left and right.
And of course, you're standing next to one of our seniors, Olivia.
Please pass her the mic and talk to us about what the team has given you that you will now carry out for the rest of your life.
- Awesome, so honestly being a part of this team has just taught me a lot of things.
But one thing we always talk about is do it for your teammates.
So everyone wants it, that's one thing that we know for sure.
Every time you hit the mat, you can feel how much each and every person wants it.
Then we look next to each other and we want it just as bad for that person.
So I would say the one thing that I've taken away from this is that sometimes you're not only doing things for yourself, but you're doing it for your teammates.
And it's just the bonds that I've taken away from this team I'll cherish forever.
- Wow, well, y'all wanted it and you got it.

(squad cheers) Wow, Lambert's Longhorns came with their horns out.
And South Forsyth stood several points behind.
Lambert scored 104 to take the title.
North Paulding came in second with 102.

Tell us what was your approach to winning this season?
- I can't even tell you how proud I am of this team.
We worked so, so hard this past few weeks, especially these last two weeks just to do it for Katelyn.
And I can't even explain how proud I am of this team and just everything that we've accomplished.
- We're happy for you, too, Sarah.
Coach Fowler, what would you attribute to this culmination of the season?
Is it skill, is it the softer skills they have as a team?
Talk about this team for us.
- I think this team is special in ways that I really can't even put into words.
They're clearly very talented, but they also push themselves, they lift each other up on the hard days.
And like Sarah touched on, we did it all for KP.
So I'm just really, really proud that we came out here and did what they are fully capable of doing!
- And you did do it.
Only one year of withdrawals without a coed title.

Five of the Top 6 had scores over 100.
Mill Creek's glorious performance scored 110.
Just behind Mill Creek was Chapel Hill's 108.5.
Milton came in third with 106.
In fourth, Lakeside, Evans and your fifth and sixth place teams were Abby Tatum's Ola and Union Grove.

- Chelsea, 128 teams came hopeful, eight clinched it and it all went too fast for my liking.
- I know, I can agree, but I plan to watch a few of those routines over the holidays on repeat.
